By the end of second grade, students should be fluent readers of age-appropriate texts, write structured, multi-paragraph stories, and possess strong math skills, including addition/subtraction within 1000 and understanding place value. They should also solve word problems, tell time to the nearest 5 minutes, and grasp basic social-emotional concepts like responsibility. 

Reading and Language Arts

Students read with fluency, analyze characters, compare/contrast stories, and write multi-paragraph pieces with a beginning, middle, and end, using correct capitalization, punctuation, and, often, cursive. They should recognize spelling patterns and use vocabulary words from their reading.

Math

• Numbers: Understand place value up to 1,000 (hundreds, tens, ones), count, read, and write numbers to 1,000.
• Operations: Master addition and subtraction facts within 20; perform addition and subtraction with two- and three-digit numbers.
• Measurements & Geometry: Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes, work with money (dollars/cents), measure length, and identify/analyze 2D and 3D shapes.
• Beginning Concepts: Understand basic fractions and, in some cases, begin 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Science & Social Studies

Science: Exploring life cycles, weather patterns, and the states of matter.
Social Studies: Understanding basic geography (maps, continents), community, and historical figures.
