By the end of third grade, students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” mastering multiplication and division (0-12), fractions, and paragraph-level writing. Key milestones include reading with fluency and comprehension, using cursive, solving two-step word problems, and analyzing text for inferences.

Reading and Language Arts

  • Comprehension: Transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by reading complex, grade-level texts and answering inference questions.

  • Writing: Write well-organized, multi-paragraph essays (opinion, informational, narrative) with introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Mechanics: Use correct grammar, punctuation, and cursive writing.
  • Research: Use dictionaries, thesauri, and digital tools for research.
